Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
