The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Backup Options
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
