Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty
The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
