Roughly fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.

Law enforcement state they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement say preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.

"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they commented.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the public for tips.

A senior official stated the vandalism left him stunned and required to be solved rapidly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in 2020.
